draw them, understand them.

In-person workshop at:
London School of Mosaic
181 Mansfield Rd, London NW3 2HP
Foundation training in Roman mosaics. You learn how to create a mosaic that applies the principles used in mosaics that varied in size from 30cm square to over 800 square metres. These principles were also seen in every mosaic across the Roman world, a consistent application in a craft that is totally unique.
This is a very practical session and we start with you identifying the rules straight away. To get the most out of the day you become part of my workshop staff and I train you as I would anyone working for me but at double the speed! You'll find it hard work at times but it will also be fun and you will get a sense of accomplishment when you start looking at those ancient mosaics and seeing things you never knew were there before.
Making a Marble Mosaic - Making a mosaic using precut marble that is suitable for outside. No cutting is required but you will get the opportunity to try cutting using a hammer & hardie (the same tools the Romans used).
Drawing Geometric Mosaics - Drawing patterns from Roman geometric strand mosaics, borders and motifs.
Freehand Geometric Mosaics - Making a mosaic but without using any drawing on your baseboard.
Hammer & hardie training - Learn to use the hammer and hardie, properly, to cut marble and other stone. This is an intensive day where we start straight away getting you to understand and put into practice these tools. You will be cutting on the floor for part of the day.
Everything you need is included in the price (as well as your workbook) and if you're making a mosaic and you don't finish you will take away enough tesserae to finish at home.
The day will run from 10.00 am through to 4.30 pm, all material supplied along with the workbook.

What previous customers have said;
Pattern commission
Recently I had a client who wanted a custom commission incorporating several Roman mosaic patterns. Since my training is not in the geometry of these specialized motifs, I went directly to the Master Lawrence Payne.
Lawrence saved me weeks of work trying to figure out and design these patterns on my own. He has spent years upon years studying these specialized techniques and actually designed the patterns specifically to the tesserae size I was using.
Though I haven’t yet found the time to study with him, I highly recommend taking advantage of his expertise gleaned from years of study, trial and error. Through his years of investment he’s already made the mistakes and adjustments to these techniques for you and passes this directly on to you. He is the Master!

Learn Roman Mosaics series manual August 2019
I so enjoyed working on the one I had tiles for. The instruction book in itself was worth the money I spent. I spent 200AU on a mosaic class and didn’t learn most of what was in that book.
Museum Guide
Lawrence Payne, I just read your e-book about Roman Mosaics--I learned so much! I love the clarity of the explanations, drawings and images--it is a treasure! I'm so glad I signed up for your newsletter!

Who is Lawrence Payne?
Ever since I started this journey in 2002 I have been constantly looking for evidence of how those ancient mosaicists worked. I've gone over the mosaics and in making copies I feel I have a greater understanding of those craftsmen. Now I want to give you the chance to do this work for yourself.
Making small mosaics is no different from working on a full floor, you use the same method, the same outlook.
